Is Heroku Connect real-time?
No. Heroku Connect polls rather than streams continuously. By default it polls Salesforce for changes on a configurable interval as fast as every 10 minutes, and separately polls its own trigger log for Postgres-to-Salesforce writes roughly every 2 minutes. It can use the Salesforce Streaming API to trigger a poll sooner, but the underlying model stays poll-based. Stacksync uses change data capture with sub-second propagation in both directions instead.
What are the best alternatives to Heroku Connect?

Partially. Writes Heroku Connect makes back to Salesforce use the SOAP or Bulk API, which don't count against your org's standard daily API request limit. But Heroku Connect's own API is separately rate-limited to 5,000 requests per connection per day (100/day for "Poll Now"), and other Salesforce limits like concurrent queries still apply.
