Why multi-3PL ops are painful

Three reasons running multiple 3PLs is an integration nightmare.

Adding a 3PL to your fulfillment network should be a contract negotiation, not a six-week integration project. Here's where it usually falls apart.

01 — Per-3PL APIs

Every 3PL has its own API, its own EDI, its own quirks

Major 3PLs offer modern REST APIs (ShipBob, ShipHero); regional ones run on EDI X12 over SFTP; small ones email CSVs. Wiring all three patterns into your OMS takes a different project per partner.

COVERAGE
02 — Inventory drift

Your storefront thinks you have 100 units; the 3PL has 78

Inventory adjustments at the 3PL (damages, recounts, returns) lag back to your OMS. Customers buy what isn't there; refunds and apologies follow.

FULFILLMENT
03 — Routing logic

Picking the cheapest fulfillment route is manual

With 5 3PLs, optimal routing changes per order based on inventory, distance, carrier rates, and SLAs. Most teams hard-code rules and lose 5–10% on suboptimal fulfillment.

Can we route orders dynamically across 3PLs?

Yes. Stacksync exposes a routing engine — define rules (cheapest, fastest, by zone, by inventory) and it picks the optimal 3PL per order, then sends it via that 3PL's preferred protocol.

What about EDI 940/943/944/945 transactions?

Full support. Stacksync's EDI engine handles standard 4PL/3PL transactions (940 warehouse shipping order, 943 warehouse stock transfer shipment advice, 944 receipt advice, 945 shipping advice) as first-class operations, not raw bytes.

How real-time is inventory sync?

Sub-second for 3PLs with webhook support (ShipBob, ShipHero, ShipStation), 1–5 minutes for poll-based 3PLs, 30 minutes for EDI-only ones (transmission cadence is configurable per partner).

Can small / regional 3PLs that only do email + CSV work?

Yes. Stacksync ingests from SFTP, email attachments (S/MIME), and shared drives, parses common CSV / fixed-width formats, and syncs them into your OMS like any other connector.
